History of Asbury Park:

  • The history of Asbury Park dates back to the late 1800s, when James A. Bradley, a real estate developer, purchased a large tract of land along the coast and began developing it as a seaside resort. He named the area after Francis Asbury, the first American bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

  • In 1871, Bradley opened the Asbury Park Pavilion, a large hotel and entertainment venue that quickly became a popular destination for visitors. The city continued to grow in the following years, with the construction of more hotels, homes, and other buildings.

  • The boardwalk was built in 1887, and it quickly became a popular spot for visitors.  In the early 20th century, Asbury Park was a popular destination for wealthy vacationers, and it was known for its grand hotels and elegant restaurants. The city was also home to a thriving African American community, and it was a popular destination for black musicians and performers.

  • During World War II, Asbury Park's popularity waned as vacationers turned to more exotic destinations. The city struggled in the post-war years, and many of the grand hotels and other buildings fell into disrepair.  In the 1970s and 1980s, Asbury Park experienced a resurgence as a destination for punk and new wave music. The city was home to a number of popular music venues and was a popular destination for young people.

  • More recently, Asbury Park has undergone a revitalization, with many of the historic buildings being restored, and new businesses and restaurants opening. The city has also become a popular destination for LGBTQ visitors and is known for its annual Pride Parade.
